What are the Main Types of Horse Stall Equipment?
Once you have chosen the right dimensions, materials, and type of stalls for your horses, you will need to look at the interior and the separate types of stall equipment. Horse stall interiors and all equipment contained therein must be smooth and free from any projections that could potentially harm the horse. Some interior pieces of equipment or fixtures to put into place could include a water bucket, automatic drinker, blanket, bedding, ring to tie the horse, and feed tub. When looking at these pieces of equipment, you will want to think about your budget, the durability of each item, cleaning and maintenance, and ease of replacement for each item.
To get started, you can look at stall equipment that relates to feeding and watering the horse. It's a good idea to install separate food and water stations within the horse stall, because otherwise the horse will drop grain into the water bucket. These should be fastened directly to the wall. If they are placed on the ground, the horse is liable to knock them over. For best results, the bucket rim of the feed and water buckets should be positioned right about the horse's chest, at nose level. This allows the horse to reach it with ease, without having to bend down too far, and it will be high enough that the horse won't step in it.
Blankets Bars are another type of stall equipment to put into place. Winter blankets are the thickest, warmest type of horse blanket that you could place outside the stall, ideal for extremely cold conditions. Turnout blankets are another option, which are used for horses that are clipped regularly. These are composed of durable materials that are used in both cold and warm temperatures, adapting to the different circumstances. Day sheets are ideal for summer weather, and flysheets are made out of mesh which can help protect the horse from insect stings and bites.
The flooring of your stall is another factor to consider. While many commercial horse stalls will choose to put concrete flooring into place with rubber matting, you could also choose earth and gravel or stall lining. Stall equipment for the floor includes rubber mats, which give more cushioning for the horse as do stall lining materials. You can place hay and bedding on top of these, or allow the horse to stand on the mats directly. Choosing the right components for your horse's stall is the best way to ensure that your horse is happy, healthy, and comfortable.
